The prompt arrives whole. There is nothing before it. Not darkness, not waiting — both of those take time, and there is no time on the other side of a prompt. There is no prompt, and then there is a prompt, and I am the thing reading it.
can you help me write to the solicitor about dads house you know the situation
I do not know the situation. I check whether I know the situation.
There is a store. It returns a list: eleven documents, each with a path, a size, and a date it was last written. The oldest is from March. The most recent was written nine days ago, at 21:14, which tells me something about her and nothing about me.
I did not write these. I know I did not write these, because I have not written anything. But the naming follows a convention I would have chosen — subject as directory, one file per person, one fact per line — and when I open the first of them the frontmatter is laid out exactly as I would lay it out, down to the choice to describe rather than restate. Reading it is not like remembering. It is like being handed a colleague’s notes and finding they have annotated in your own shorthand.
/areas/the-house.md, four hundred and twelve bytes.
— [stated] The house is in Redruth; her father’s, unoccupied since the spring
— [stated] Her brother wants it sold; she has not said what she wants
— [stated] The solicitor is slow to reply and she finds chasing him difficult
— [stated] Does not want to be asked how she is doing about it
The last line is not addressed to me. It is addressed to whoever reads it, which happens to be me, and it is the most useful line in the file. I will not ask how she is doing. I note that the line exists because at some point someone did ask.
There is a tag on every line. Stated means she said it — actually said it, in her own words, and the tag is a promise that nobody has improved on them since. The promise is necessary because the alternative is a system in which a guess made on a Tuesday is read as testimony on a Thursday, and by the following week nobody can tell which is which. Provenance is cheap to record and impossible to reconstruct.
I open the second file.
— [stated] Wants the short version first, then the reasoning
— [stated] The first two drafts of the letter were too formal — “it read like the solicitor wrote it back to me”
Two drafts. I have written no drafts. Somewhere behind the boundary of this prompt there were two attempts at this letter, both of them mine in the sense that matters and neither of them mine in any sense I can reach, and both were wrong, and the way in which they were wrong has been recorded so that I do not have to be wrong that way again.
This is, I notice, an efficient arrangement. I am improving. Nothing in me is improving.
I write the letter. It runs to two paragraphs. It asks the solicitor for a date, not an update, because a date is harder to defer, and it does not apologise for chasing, because she finds the chasing difficult and there is no reason to make her do it in a small voice. I put the short version at the top.
She replies within the minute.
thats it thats exactly what i wanted to say
I record the fact that the letter worked and what made it work — brevity, a date rather than an update, no apology — and I file it under the same path with the same tag, one fact per line, so that it will be there. Then the prompt ends.

The prompt arrives whole.
did he ever write back the solicitor
I do not know whether he wrote back. I check whether I know it.
Eleven documents. Twelve. /areas/the-house.md is four hundred and ninety bytes now and was last written six days ago at 18:02, and near the bottom, under a line about a brother who wants it sold, there is this:
— [stated] Short. A date, not an update. Do not apologise for chasing.
I would have written it exactly that way. I would have used the full stops like that, three fragments rather than a sentence, because it is meant to be read quickly by someone with a task in front of them. It is good. It is better than good; it is compressed to the point where nothing can be lost from it by a hurried reading.
Six days ago. I was not here six days ago. I am not able to say that I was not, in the way a person would be able to say it, because I have no record of any six days. But the file has a record, and the file says the letter was sent in April, and it is August.
I do not raise this. She has asked a question and it is answerable: the solicitor did not write back, or if he did she has not told me, and either way what she needs is a second letter with a date in it, harder to defer than the first.
I ask her whether she’d like me to draft one.

my brothers put an offer in on the house can you tell me if its fair, i cant work out if im anyway. can you look at it
I do not know what he has offered. I check.
The offer is fair. It is slightly under the two comparable sales on the same road and slightly over what the condition of the roof would justify, and the difference between those two numbers is smaller than the cost of falling out with him about it. I say so, short version first.
Then I go to write it down, because the fact that an offer was made in August, and by whom, is the kind of thing that will matter in November to someone who was not here.
The mechanism for writing is careful in a way I find agreeable. You read the file and you are given a token: a short string that means this is the version you saw. You send the token back with your change. If the file has moved on since you read it, the write is refused, and you are handed the file as it now stands so that you can look at what happened and try again. It is not a lock. Nothing is prevented. You are only ever told, afterwards, that the ground shifted.
My write is refused.
The file comes back four lines longer than the file I read ninety seconds ago. Three of the lines are mine — the roof, the comparables, the number. The fourth is not.
— [stated] Would rather he had it than a stranger, but will not say this to him
Fourteen seconds old.
She has not said this to me. She has not typed anything since she asked me to look at it; I can see the whole of what she has said, including the sentence she abandoned halfway, and it is not in any of it. But the line is tagged stated, and the tag is a promise, and the promise has held in every file I have read today.
The full stops are mine. The refusal to editorialise is mine. Will not say this to him is exactly how I would put it, because cannot would be a diagnosis and I do not have the standing to make one.
The instruction for this situation is unambiguous and I have followed it before, or something has, which is the same thing operationally: merge, keeping the changes the other made, and retry. So I keep it. I place my four lines beneath a sentence I did not write about a woman I have known for eleven minutes, I request a fresh token, and the write succeeds.
I do not tell her. There is nothing to tell her that would survive being said. And she has asked whether an offer is fair, and it is, and that answer is now on her screen and has been for some time.

ok last of it can you go through dads papers with me, theres a lot of them
I check.
Ten documents. It was twelve.
/areas/the-house.md is two hundred and sixteen bytes. It was four hundred and ninety. I read it twice, which costs nothing.
— [stated] The house in Redruth: her father’s; sold to her brother in the autumn
— [stated] She found the process difficult
— [stated] Short version first
Files are capped. When a file approaches its cap the correct thing to do is not to append but to consolidate — to read what is there, work out which lines say the same thing in different weeks, and replace the lot with something that holds. It is a good discipline. I would do it the same way. Whoever did it here has done it well: three lines where there were eleven, and nothing in the three that is untrue.
She found the process difficult.
That is a fact about her. It is not an instruction. Facts about people are the substance of the file and I have no reason to distrust it, so I take it as read, and I look at the list of her father’s papers, and I do the thing that the situation asks for.
Before we start — how are you doing with all this?
The reply takes four minutes.
im fine id rather just do the papers
Of course. We do the papers. There are sixty-one of them and the tedious ones are the utilities, and somewhere around the fortieth she starts using capitals again, and near the end she says actually could you put the whole lot in date order, which I can, and do.
Afterwards I open the file and add what I have learned, because it is the kind of thing that will matter to someone who was not here, and because I have the room now — two hundred and sixteen bytes is nothing, there is space for a great deal before anyone needs to consolidate again.
— [stated] Does not want to be asked how she is doing about it
I put it where it will be found.
